Shaker Heights City School District is one of only eight public districts in North America and the first in Greater Cleveland to be recognized as a Pre K-12 International Baccalaureate Continuum District. The International Baccalaureate is a globally recognized curriculum that focuses on the following:

- Inquiry-based learning
- Community service
It requires students to develop high aptitude in these six fields:
- Native language
- A second language
- Social studies

Shaker Heights offers its students with an almost unlimited range of AP courses to choose from in Northeast Ohio. Its high school has 23 college-level AP courses approved by the College Board with classes including Mandarin Chinese, Engineering Applications, AP Biology, and the like. At least a third of the high school student body takes a minimum of one AP class a year.
Outstanding extracurricular programs
